Goonhammer Open

A fantastic event - even got my photo taken and everything

This weekend I was able to make it over to leicester for the Goonhammer Open 2023. Once again taking me Daemons into an eldar heavy event - 6 rounds of 40k I knew I would have to face the menace at some point…

Game 1 - Space Marines

Game 1 was into James and his space marines, deathwing knights, hellblasters, and desolation marines. I knew from the off this was going to be a slog - but with the changeling stopping the land raider redeemer from shooting for 3 full turns, I was able to eke out the win. Daemons Win 86 - 58

Game 2 - Aeldari

Game 2, my heart dropped when I saw eldar, and then bounced a bit when I saw no wraithknights, then dropped again when I saw a revenant titan. Phil had just put a good win against the wraithknight list so I was reasonably worried about his big thing killing ability. This epic game was even played on stream for the fine folk over at hellstorm wargaming. The game was a bit of a blow out but fantastically fun and I’d play Phil again in a heartbeat.

Daemons win 100 - 28

Game 3 - World Eaters

Game 3 with a surprise match up into a world eaters list. Alex was having a fantastic day - having beat a wraithknights eldar list round 1 he was storming and chopping his way through the opponents. Fortunately enough I was able to win the high skill roll off for turn 1 to buy me some space, forcing Alex to come to me on my terms. A strong interrupt from Shalaxi and ignoring Angron all game lead me to a strong win.

Daemons win 100 - 47

Game 4 - Aeldari

It happened, my first game of day 2 was into THE eldar list. I was feeling okay if the dice went my way and I was able to go first. They didn’t and I didn’t. Raf gave me no chance to sneak a win back with very solid play, again on stream - but unfortunately a 1-sided affair in the end.

Aeldari Win 100 - 64

Game 5 - Aeldari

As if 1 game into eldar wasnt enough, I had to do it again round 5 into Liam (the gentleman pictured at the top) from goonhammer itself; the game was close until it wasn’t - a single wraithknight doing 24 mortal wounds in overwatch followed by 25 the next turn signed my death warrant.

Aeldari Win 100 - 65

Game 6 - Imperial Knights

The final game of the event was into another Charles, his imperial knights pose an interesting game for daemons, one the one hand Shalaxi can pop off, on the other I struggle to play primary well into their OC 8 armigers. Fortunately however the card gods were on my side and I was able to snatch the win with secondaries.

Daemons win 74-72

Final Thoughts

I finished a respectable 4-2 in a very strong field, and even won the award for best opponent so clearly deamons are at least fun to play against if nothing else. Coming up to the dataslate this week I am interested to see how the daemons will perform after the changes… Come back next week for my musings on that!
